Dear Adventurer Families,
Just touching base about a few (well, maybe more than a few) things…
Friday Workshops
We’ve been having a blast. A big focus last week was creating stories with a partner and recording them as stop motion animations, using iPads. There were snips of paper everywhere and the room was sparking with creativity. Your kids are amazing and I enjoy every moment with them.
Work Journal #1
Work Journal #1 will end on Oct. 4th. It is due in the office no later than 4:15pm on Oct. 10th. This would be a good time to either email me your work journal or set up a meeting with me to get feedback on it, if you have any questions or wonderings. I’ve attached a checklist to help you with preparing your work journal to turn in (you can also find it on the work journal page of our DP: www.dviaadventurers.weebly.com).
Work Journal #2 Meeting/Student-Led Conferences
You probably have a very vague memory of me talking about Student-Led Conferences. In the Collaborative Program, we typically hold them at the beginning of each work journal period, starting with work journal 2. It is time to schedule our first round of the year on Oct. 10th and 12th. This is NOT something for parents or kids to stress out about. It is a learning-by-doing experience. Please schedule an appt. here.
I have attached guidelines that will help you to help your child prepare for the meeting. They can also be found on our DP, along with an audio walk-through, under Resources. Additionally, I will offer a webinar (tentatively, Oct. 2nd) for those who would like to participate. More details to come.
Rock Painting and a Kindness Drop with Kary Kika
Monday, Sept. 25th, 10:30-11:30 in the Innovation Station (Art/Makerspace)
One of the things I love the most about my Adventurers group is having parent educators offer workshops for other families. We started this tradition 2 years ago and it has steadily grown. Kary Kika (Kai’s mom) is kicking things off this year with a Rock Painting and Kindness Drop workshop. Students will be focusing on creating “gifts” to leave in places for people to find, as an act of kindness. This is an artistic endeavor and an opportunity to do something for others. I hope that everyone will be able to attend. RSVP here. Families welcome.
Dive In and Offer a Workshop…no experience needed
Would you like to follow Kary’s lead? DVIA parent and nurse, Cheryl Elliston, has offered to do a Germs and Hand Washing Lab with our group on a Tuesday. She does it with people of all ages and Jennifer’s group had a blast. As it will be a 30-45 minute lab, I’d love to pair it with another offering to make it worth your time in driving to campus. Let me know if you are interested and I can help you to make a plan.
Google Group
Are you part of our DVIA Adventurers Google Group? It is a great way to send out information to other families. If you need a new invite or want me to add you directly, let me know.
MyMaps
As some of you know, I have created a map for us to share that will store two types of information at
www.mymaps.google.com. Email me to get the link. The map has 2 layers and you are invited (not required) to add to both.
Home Visits
I am available to be invited over for a home visit. Many students enjoy visiting with me in their home base, sharing interests with me, etc. It can be casual visit, you and I can chat, I can be with you as you do a lesson, you can share your homeschool plan/set-up with me, etc. No two home visits are ever alike. The only rule is that you are not allowed to do extra cleaning just because I’m coming over. You can invite me here.
October Office Hours
October Office Hours are available. You know the drill. Use them as much or as little as you would like. Sign up here.
I Love Hearing From You!
Even this early in the year, I’ve heard such wonderful stories about the experiences you are having as homeschoolers. Please keep sharing…the good, the bad and the…! It is all part of the tapestry we are weaving together and I treasure every shared moment.
Reminder: Fall Break (No Workshops, No Homeschool) will be Oct. 5th and 6th.
Best,
Janette

- Layer 1: This is the place where you can pin your home address (or general neighborhood location, if that is more comfortable for you. This will help you to connect with and carpool with those who live near you.
- Layer 2: This is the place to pin places of interest, field trip location ideas, etc. This can become an invaluable permanent resource, if we all contribute.
