Good news! Our calendar page is up and running. Events relevant to our group can be found there, with links to sign-ups included. Also, you will find new resources on the resources, math resources and language arts resources pages.
It has been so wonderful meeting new families and reconnecting with returning families this week! I hope that our school-wide approach of encouraging you all to take your time during this first week and a half to set goals, explore possibilities, co-create plans, explore resources, get organized, etc. is adding to an enjoyable start to your year.
Here are links to some resources you might want to use when thinking about your child’s (and your) learning style.
Our 1:1 meetings will continue next week. We are spending time connecting and discussing plans and needs. For those of you who did not attend our group meeting yesterday, I have information to share with you about Workshops on Wednesdays, Thursday Expeditions, clubs, our lending library, work journals and more. As part of this process, please take time to explore the resources and links on this website. While it is a work in progress, you will find many helpful items.
Speaking of work journals, you can find them all on the DV Connect Parent Educator Resource Site. On that page, you will also find a checklist and FAQs, including examples of daily learning log entries. Please remember to use the Collaborative work journal. This Resource Site is a treasure trove and worth taking some time to dive into. Learning Goals can be found on our class website. I am still uploading additional resources. If you need something you don’t see, please let me know.
I hope that you are all going to have your child(ren) take part in our Workshops on Wednesdays. We will be Seeing the World Through the Eyes of Leonardo da Vinci. Our mornings will focus on life during the Renaissance and observational drawing. Our afternoons will be spent exploring patterns and experimenting with light and water. Please sign up here and if your child is not able to attend for the full workshop day, email me with details.
Sign-ups for our next two Thursday Expeditions are available. Please RSVP (see embedded links, below):
Would you like to have some additional time to chat this month? You can sign up for an open 1:1 meeting slot here or for an office hours appointment here.
Website of the week…Check out the Greater Good Science Center. “Greater Good magazine turns scientific research into stories, tips, and tools for a happier life and a more compassionate society.” You’ll find articles and resources to support your family’s ongoing development of empathy, compassion and much more.
We are so excited to begin a new school year with you in the Collaborative Program! We have been busy setting up our new home base, planning projects, organizing field trips, and preparing for a great year of learning. We have lots of information to share with you so please read carefully and be on the lookout for more emails and sign ups coming from your Collaborative Team.
This year, Janette will be working with K-4th grade students (known as the Adventurers) and their families, including Wednesday workshops. All 5th - 8th grade Collaborative students (known as the Voyagers) will be supported by and have workshops with Jennifer. We recognize that this wide age range can add some challenges to a classroom environment and is a change from last year’s Collaborative workshop groupings. Please know that we are being very intentional in our project planning to make this arrangement work and are committed to creating an environment in which each student will thrive.
We can’t wait to meet with each family individually between the dates of August 16th - 24th. You can sign up for an appointment with Janette here. Please make appointments for each of your children to ensure we have enough time (we may not need all of the time but better safe than sorry). At this meeting, you and your child will check in with your teacher about your homeschool plans and resources. You’ll be able to share what you are most excited about this school year, and what about it makes you nervous. This will be a time for us together to figure out how we can best support you in your homeschooling adventures. We are really looking forward to this time and we believe it will be very valuable to the start of a successful year.
First Parent Educator Workshop - August 16th 9:30 - 11 - We will be holding a workshop for all Collaborative families on Thursday, Aug 16th to discuss many of the logistics of homeschooling, including guidelines for this year’s work journals and work samples required, resources available to you, accessing our class websites, and planning for a great year of learning. Whether you are new to homeschooling or have been here for years, we encourage you to come to hear about all that’s going on in the Collaborative Program. Please sign up here.
August 16th is the first day of homeschooling for the 2018-2019 school year. See the attached document Parent Educator Survival Guide for some tips and ideas to get your homeschooling off to a great start.
Beginning on Wednesday, August 29th, we will be offering on campus workshops for all Collaborative students. These will take place every Wednesday from 9:15 - 3:15. Please note that all students need to follow our dress code policy outlined in the school handbook which includes a collared shirt or Da Vinci logo t-shirt and closed-toe shoes. When students come to Workshops on Wednesday (WoW), they should bring a reusable water bottle, snack, and lunch.
Next week you will receive a sign up for our WoW days and those sign ups will have more detailed information about what to expect. But here’s a sneak peek at the topics these Workshops will focus on first semester.
Are you ready to have fun with us on Thursdays? We are planning a wide variety of field trips, hikes, and social events for every week, starting with a get-together at Del Aire park on Thursday, Aug. 16th. Sign-ups with more information will start arriving in your inbox tomorrow.
Work Journals...a cause for celebration! Work journals have been simplified this year. In our first Parent Educator Workshop, we will explain the new format. All work journals for the year are being uploaded to the parent-run DVIA Parent Educator Resource Site and will be available before the first day of homeschooling. You might want to bookmark this site for future reference.
We are each in the midst of updating our group websites. As soon as they are ready for launch, we will let you know. Thanks for your patience.
SAVE THE DATE! We are having a whole-school kick-off party on Weds., August 15th, 3:00-6:00pm. This will be a great opportunity to connect and reconnect with others in our community. There will be fun activities for all, including a drum circle and rock painting (to include in our outdoor environment). See the next school newsletter for more details. We hope to see you there!
Whether you are a veteran homeschooler or new to the whole idea, we are here for you! We will provide parent educator workshops (in person and online), office hours, home visits, and resources to support you every step of the way along your journey. We love doing this and encourage you to “use your resources” (as we teach the kids to do).
Looking forward to working with you this year,
Janette and Jennifer
