Our projects are off to a great start!
Hopefully, you’ve heard a bit about biomes, ecosystems, environments, organisms, symbiosis, and more about our mammals project. Next week, we will complete our initial foray into biomes and form groups, each to more deeply study a specific biome and create a backdrop for the mammal marionettes they will eventually create.
In our initial exploration of culture, students considered the elements of culture represented in this wheel as they pertain to their families (they took their wheel home with them). We touched, very superficially, on the Aztec civilization (connecting back to our field trip to LACMA last year) and created some Aztec-inspired line drawings.
We were so fortunate to be able to meet artist Alex Weinstein at the Manhattan Beach Cultural Arts Center this week. He spoke with us about his art, how he approaches his work, his techique and much more. His conversation with us helped students to make the connection between art and artist and the idea that art represents artists. He was very generous with his time and we could not be more grateful. MBCAC is always very welcoming toward our group and is a wonderful small space art experience.
Please see previous posts for our field trip line-up.
*note...the deadline to sign up and pay for our field trip to the STAR Eco Station has been extended to Feb. 19th. Go into your SignUpGenius account to sign up.
Reminder: NWEA MAP Assessments
Our 2nd round of MAP testing has begun and runs through next Friday (Jan. 31st). This tool can identify skills your child has developed over the past few months and help to identify areas to focus on next. Please sign up for 2 sessions: one for reading and one for math. Your student can take the tests on campus or at home. Sign up here. Please be sure to indicate home or school AND math or reading in the comment section of each appointment.
If you have questions about the MAP assessment, please let me know. If you choose not to have your child participate, I ask that you inform me of the assessment strategy you are using instead to measure skill acquisition in reading and math and to share the results with me.
