As we move into this Thanksgiving season, I want to share with you how much I appreciate each and every one of you. Your commitment to your children’s learning and development as well as your participation in our community are a large part of what makes DVIA such a special place. Thanksgiving provides a natural opportunity to focus on gratitude with your family. Some articles on the practice, science and social implications of gratitude can be found on the Greater Good Science Center website.
- Our Fall workshops will end on Dec. 8th. Families are invited to see the grand finale of our Stellar Hangout (which will be a semi-rehearsed, live-action role play performance) at 11:30 that day. This will be followed by a simple potluck lunch for everyone and the usual outdoor play time. In the afternoon, families are invited to participate with the kids in rocketry exploration. The day will be set up to support all kids, no matter whose families are available to come. Someone will record video for those unable to attend.
- If your child will not be in workshops on Dec. 1 or Dec. 8, please let me know.
- I am finalizing the content of our 2nd semester workshops (so many great options to narrow down!). However, I can tell you that they will be held on Mondays approx. 12:30-3:00 and Fridays 9:15-12:00. Students will be welcome to participate in lunch and outdoor lunchtime play on Fridays. The workshops are being developed through the lens of creativity.
Please remember to have your child adhere to dress code expectations whenever they come to campus. I know this can be tricky to remember when you are coming in the middle of your day. Some families stash an extra polo or DVIA tshirt in the car for those “oops” days.
NWEA MAPs Assessments
I am adding two additional MAPs sessions on Tuesday, Nov. 28th and Wednesday, Nov. 29th at 1pm. I will send out the SignUpGenius for making an appointment. If these times doe not work for you, please sign up for office hours (60 minutes) or contact me to schedule a time. The last day to complete Fall MAPs for our group will be Wednesday, Dec. 6th.
Exhibition 4 Kids Workshop
I will hold a presentation skills workshop for students on Monday, Dec. 11th at 2pm. More info to come.
Student-Led Conferences for Work Journal Period 3
Due to our shifting Exhibition from before Thanksgiving to before Winter Break, our normal SLC window overlaps with prepping for and participating in Exhibition. As such, students fully participating in Exhibition will count as your official required meeting with me for Work Journal period 3. However, I do think that SLCs are a valuable experience for students and want to offer them for everyone who is interested. I will have large blocks of office hour time available in mid-Dec. Please sign up for an office hours appointment for your child’s SLC, if interested.
Evening for Educators
LACMA’s next Evening for Educators will be “Empathy Through Art” on the evening of Tuesday, Dec. 5th. http://www.lacma.org/evenings-for-educators This would be a great opportunity to connect with each other and have some adult learning and collaboration time. You will walk away with ideas to use in your homeschooling. I hope to see you there.
Wishing you a wonderful Thanksgiving week!
